Akashi BBQ is the branch of Taishu Yakiniku with a different name – that alone says a lot about this Japanese BBQ joint.
For some of you, this would mean that you don’t need to travel all the way to Taman Desa anymore. But for us, it doesn’t really make much difference since we stay in Kepong.
I remember we spent a little over RM60 for our last dinner at Taishu Yakiniku. It was a satisfying meal, we went home stuffed and that experience left me with a good impression. This time around, there were four of us so we could afford to order more things.
We did not try their Genghiskhan in our previous visit but now I realize it was a huge mistake. This lamb dish is served on a dome-shaped skillet that resembles the Mongolian soldiers’ helmet in prewar Japan. It is first brought to sizzling hot on charcoal flame, then continued to cook on a gas stove.
For RM20, you get a good amount of lamb shoulder nicely marinated, flavorful without any unpleasant “gamey” taste when cooked. Even the soup used to boil the vege at the side is tasty as hell. If you can’t get enough of it (very likely), you can request for additional lamb shoulder at RM15/portion.
Pork Ramen is available at only RM10 – definitely value for money. I don’t know why but I found the ramen to be tastier than I remembered, especially the chashu.
Fried Ramen @ RM10 is equally popular and should be a hit among the kids. The delightfully springy noodle is lightly seasoned, slightly sweet (from the mayo) while the pork lard bits gave a much needed crunchy balance to it. Don’t expect any ‘wok hei’ though.

If I had to choose between pork and beef at Akashi, I’d gladly pick the latter anytime. But just to be clear, I am not saying that the pork here is bad.
It’s simply because the steak (RM25) and ribeye (RM10) can be enjoyed medium as opposed to well-done for the pork. Not to mention the beef cuts are marinated which adds extra flavor too. So unless you can’t take beef for whatever reason, the steak is worth the extra bucks.
Pork Inside Leg – RM10.
L: Pork Neck @ RM10. R: Pork Belly @ RM10.

We ordered every single pork cut available on the menu. As long as you don’t overcook the meat, I am sure you will find any cut to be enjoyable.
If you are not convinced with your grilling ability, you can always ask the staff to do it for you. Then you can concentrate on the fun part – eating. Our favorite (for pork) has got to be the Shoulder Loin @ RM10 for its perfect balance of meat and fat.
Seafood is available in foils but the selection is limited only to salmon and squid currently. Since we already had the prawn foil yaki previously, we opted to try the Salmon Foil Yaki @ RM15.
It’s really important not to overcook it because the fish would turn dry and rubbery – which was what happened to us exactly. We paid extra attention during our second attempt (yup, we ordered another salmon foil) and the fish turned out A LOT better – flaky and moist.
If you have been to Taishu Yakiniku then you may notice that the menu at Akashi BBQ is a trimmed-down version. Certain items like beef tongue (my favorite), pork heart, stomach and intestines are not available. When I checked with the boss, I was told that the items will be added soon. That’s good to know!
